Group feedback

I made a short presentation to show the group my work for feedback which you can see here –> space presentation

This feedback was useful, as I not only got feedback from the group on my own ideas, I also managed to get a bit of inspiration from other group members work on little things, for example, adding in the top status bar at the top of the apps, or creating an app logo for the app store. All of this was useful.

A piece of feedback I received was that the perspectives on the website were slightly off, although worked, and to counteract this I could make my website 3D. This would involve more interactivity where the user would drag around and see the whole planet from every side. I think that this would be good and would make it even more interesting for my target audience.

I also asked the group whether they understood what my website was trying to explain with the grids as I was previously unsure about whether this was understandable. The feedback that I received was positive and so I will keep it this way.

There are still a few changes that I would like to make to my designs but only minimal ones. I may also try and create a logo for my app.

About my final designs

Below are all 6 letters, uppercase and lowercase, that I have designed.

I am more happy with some letters than others, for example I quite like the ‘e’ and the ‘c’, and I much prefer the lowercase type than the uppercase which I think could have done with some more work. I think that parts of the letters, especially where they join could have been made a little bit neater, the ‘u’ in particular. Although I like the lowercase ‘r’ I am not a fan of the uppercase one as much. I think that it would have looked better without the serif on the left hand side. My favourite of the letters are the ‘e’ and the ‘c’. I think that these are how I wanted my font to look, whereas the other four letters don’t look up to scratch. I think that the lines on the ‘e’ and ‘c’ are smooth and neat and make a professional looking type. I decided that the diamonds inside the letters could change colour, depending on the colour that the user set. Only the uppercase letters would have the diamonds inside as I think that this would make them stand out from the lowercase ones and show that they could be used maybe as a slightly decorative letter. I am still unsure what my font would be used for, or what sort of product/service it would be used for. Originally I thought a circus/casino but I have rethought this and decided that it doesn’t look right for either of these so I will rethink what it would be used to promote.

Cut Out

I was beginning to get stuck for ideas again when I found a piece of typography on a poster I have in my room.

I liked the differences between the stroke weights of the letters and so I tried to copy this into my sketchbook, which did not go so well. I then moved on and researched fonts by Tumblr searching it. I came across this font below:

I found the cutout shapes in the letters interesting and wanted to replicate this in my own work. I merged the two fonts that I have been talking about to create a serif font with thick and thin strokes with cutout shapes in the letters.

This is my favourite design so far. There is a lot of work needed to it before it would be a complete, working font, for example, I need to work on the sizes and shapes of all the letters so they are all equal and matching, and I am not happy with the ‘R’ at all, however I think for a first draft of a design I think that it has gone quite well. I like the serifs on the ‘T’ and ‘E’ and I am happy with the shape of the ‘C’, although I do feel that it needs a bit of work (straightening up etc). I am particularly happy with the ‘A’ as I believe that this gives the font a different edge to it and makes it a little bit quirky.

I chose the diamond shape inside the letters to start with just as a shape to put inside as I didn’t want to completely copy the font that I had found. In reflection, it has inspired to me to look into playing cards and the fonts used there and if I continue on with this design I think that my product that my font is designed for would be for a pack of cards, which I will look into in more detail at some point.

Negative space

I had been struggling to come up with ideas for a little while and then found an image of a singer from a band I like that has an interesting tattoo which uses negative space. I found this concept particularly interesting as at first glance it looks as though he just has unusual shapes tattooed on his forearm but at closer inspection you can decipher the phrase ‘carpe noctem‘. Below is an image of the actual tattoo as well as a close up, drawn out version so you can see it clearly.

I liked the idea of using the negative space in and around the letters as a way of creating a font rather than with the actual letters themselves. I had a few goes at attempting to write out a few words using this method, while drawing in the letters to make it obvious what the letters are and the shapes of them.

I found a few logistical problems with this idea. To make this font work, the letters have to be, or I think it looks best, when the letters are formed using straight lines with no curves. This creates some problems when writing out certain letters, as the letter ‘O’ and ‘D’ look fairly similar when written one with straight edges. I cannot use the same way of writing the two letters as there would be no way of differentiating between them so I would have to come up with two separate ways of writing each letter or find a way of forming the letter that would make it obviously different. You can see in the example above of the word ‘London’, that when the letters are not drawn in for clarity, the ‘O’ and the ‘D’ are very difficult to distinguish.

I do like the idea of using negative space but I feel that it would be very difficult to create a working font from it as many letters are very similar looking. Also, I am not sure what purpose the font would be used for, other than headers.
